1. Porcupine Rim was the best I rode. Spending $20 on a shuttle was money well spent, roughly $0.01 per vertical foot, or less. The option to go up to Kokopelli adds an extra bit of singletrack to the ride. When I heard parts were shared jeep trail, I thought "I guess that's OK". In reality the jeep track is sick. The singletrack at the bottom is epic. The Notch in the middle gives me nightmares. I'm afraid I might want to try it someday.

2.Slickrock is a blast and the trail head is inside of Sand Flats campground. I'm glad I didn't fall for the temptation to just ride this one for the whole vacation as good as it was.

3. Amassa Back. Somewhat like a Porcupine Rim Jr., but there is no shuttle available. Man up and grind the jeep trails to the top where there are some great singletrack trails. Or so I'm told. My derailleur caught a rock 3/4 of the way up and didn't work as well afterward. The snapped chain on the way back down was a bonus.

4. Take the bike insurance. Then nobody at the shop has to listen to your lame story about how the derailleur flipped into the spokes while you were "just riding along".

The so-called Sand Flats had sand but was anything but flat.

Gary S. climbing the Slickrock. Note the paint marks. Trail maintenance with a brush!

Gary starting the climb at Amassa Back. This was a shared Jeep trail. Much more fun than I would have guessed.

Our rental shop.

The Giant Reign I rented here took a beating on Porcupine Rim trail that would have destroyed a lighter bike. The Jeep trail section makes Blue Mound look like a groomed WORS course. I rode it as fast as I could go without crashing.

Chile Pepper honored their inexpensive insurance without protest when an errant rock took out my derailleur. No tricks with the minor scratches on the frame either. They did warn us that the insurance did not cover theft. I imagine that stupid abuse would also not be covered.

The climb you see Gary conquering in this photo was unbelievably steep, without a way I could find to build up momentum for the attack. I scrambled on foot to the top for this photo.

The rock on this trail isn't slick in the sense that it's slippery. In fact, it's more like 60 grit paper for sanding floors. I've never ridden a surface with equivalent traction. My guess is the "slick" in the trail name means bare.

Way to go Gary!

Awesome photos Walt 8) Sounds like you had a great time. Man I hope to get back there some day. I think George Bush( the W one) was in office the last time I rode out there. I hope to make it back some day. With more vacation in my life now, things like this just may be possible :)

Phil's World was a fun short ride.  I'm looking forward to some more Kokopelli stuff in Fruita and maybe some new stuff in Moab.  I've never ridden in Durango and am stoked for it!
