Help, which trail should we go to?
« on: June 21, 2012, 10:45 am »
We will be getting a small group to go for a ride this Tuesday, and I am not sure where we should go.. We will be coming from Milwaukee and want to have as good an overall experience as we can. I rode CamRock a month or so ago and had a GREAT time.

If you could only hit one trail, what would it be?

The group is intermediate skill/ability so a nice mix of technical, and not too physically demanding would be ideal.

Please help me figure out where we should ride.

I'd ride CamRock. Then hit the Kettles on the way back.

Blue Mound looks interesting too.. What are the pros and cons of the two parks?

If we are up to it, there might be a chance of doing both. I dont know if my lungs or legs could handle two trips in one day but it would be a fun day. :)

Blue Mounds is great but certain parts of the trail can be a bit much for beginners, but if the whole group can hold their own when the going gets rocky then it's very much worth a visit.

Rich,

What do you mean by "a bit much" technically or aerobically?  I know that it is hilly there but I have never rode there.

Rich,

Technically. The terrain is very rocky in some places and it could potentially frustrate someone who isn't prepared for it.  That said, I've seen riders that very much look like beginners, riding hybrid bikes, that are several miles into it and have big smiles on their faces. It's a great trail system and worth checking out, I don't intend to scare anyone away from there but it's worth knowing that it's more technical than most trails in this region.

Also, there is a swimming pool at the trail head which is wonderful on a hot day so bring your suits!

I love riding Blue Mound, but if you are looking for something "not too physically demanding" Blue Mound isn't it.  In particular, the second half of the main loop, Holy Schist/Home Stretch has long stretches with loads of rock, making it a tough ride for someone with a hard tail bike.

Blue Mound can be very rewarding for someone looking for a challenge, but in my opinion Cam-Rock is a better bet to please a group with intermediate skills.

I love all our area trails and will point out Blue Mound may not be as scary or challenging as many think if you ride the area known as Over Lode (Pleasure Valley). That area does require a serious climb to get home, but is not so rocky.

My 10 y.o. daughter is really just an intermediate rider and BMSP is her favorite but I confess we take things at her pace and walk when it's too much.

Your group might want to try Blue Mound at a time when we have an organized no drop ride there to know all the options. Cam Rock and the bike park have weekly organized rides and sometimes we shout out one for Blue Mound.

Our CORPfest at Blue Mound might be one to put on your calendar.

Have fun.

Speaking of CORP-fest, I see it's been taken off the calendar...was set for July 21.

Good on ya for helping Heather out too!  She does a lot for the club year after year.  She really deserves the business.

Good point, Nate. Heather has been there for us. We need to spread the love and keep giving her some business.
