The trails are only closed when wet, covered with snow, or rare occasions such as an event or program activity.
The gates can and should be closed when few or no other people are there to discourage people who do not belong there. Somewhere here is or was the story of someone doing much and expensive vandalism last year.
Many just park and ride from the gate area.
